Lake of Skeletons — Unsolved Mystery

The Lake of Skeletons (Lake Roopkund) is a lake in Chamoli, Uttarakhand (India). In 1942, skeletons were rediscovered by Nanda Devi game reserve ranger Hari Kishan Madhwal. The mystery began when scientist began testing and they found some strange anomalies at play. Present in the lake were the remains of about 800 bodies...from two different groups of people...from two different time periods separated by 1000 years. The cause of their deaths still remains in question.

In the winter of 1942, An Indian park ranger made an astonishing discovery. Around a lake deep in the Himalayan Mountains the Ranger found hundreds of human bones, some still covered in flesh. Still to this day, the spooky lake still sparks curiosity and is the home of many mysteries.

The Roopkund lake, also known as the Mystery Lake or Skeletons Lake is located at a 5-day walk into the Himalaya and more than 5,000 meters above the sea level. It is a popular trekking destination nowadays and it has been fairly known to the local people for centuries.
